I Caved and Got an iPhone 3G
I know, I know. I said that I wasn’t going to buy an iPhone but get an MSI Wind instead. See there were a couple of different events that lead me down the iPhone path instead and now I do have the 3g and I won’t be getting the Wind.
The first was that I took the Mac Mini out of my son’s room and put it in my office which is downstairs. He had been playing too many video games and although they were educational we noticed that he was not that interested in regular toys as much. A four year old that wants to play video games and not with toys can be tough to handle.
With the Mac Mini downstairs my wire then had a computer to do small tasks with without going upstairs (the kids can be easier to handle downstairs. I asked her whether she felt that we still need the Wind and she said no.
All of that lead up to us being on vacation last week and my birthday happen to be on that Monday. I mentioned to her whether she would mind if I got it and she said sure. I waited for 2 hours last Saturday night and scored a black 8GB model.
I have to say that I really like it. The GPS came in really handy on our vacation and the 3G was fast where you could get it (3G coverage is terrible in Northern California compared to the Austin area). The other thing I like about it is the plastic back instead of the aluminum one of the first generation. I had a rubber case on my first generation one because it was so slippery. With this one I don’t have a case and do not plan to get one.
All in all I am glad that I got it. I have already sold my 1st generation iPhone and my wife has already put in her order (with me) for a 3G. We are thinking of giving her phone (unactivated) to my son as a gaming console since he has taken a liking to a couple of games that I have loaded on my phone from the App Store. We will see about that

Early Update to the iPhone 2.0 Firmware, with a Little Scare
I could not resist. Mac Rumors found the pre-release version of the iPhone 2.0 firmware and I had to install it. My phone was Jailbroken so i had to do a restore to the regular 1.1.4 version firmware and then upgrade to 2.0.
Everything went well for the most part except for the fact that my mail application would not work. If I clicked the mail icon it would half-load the mail app and then crash to the desktop. I tried restoring – twice – without the issue being resolved. I did multiple searches on Mac Rumor, Gizmodo, and the Apple Support forums and nobody was having this issue so I knew it was an isolated issue.
I did come across some other folks who could not receive incoming calls (but could make them out) and it was suggested to them to re-download the update and re-restore from there. I tried this and am happy to say that it worked – my mail app does what it is supposed to and now I can check multiple emails at one time to either delete or move them to a fold.
I Am Getting an MSI Wind Instead of an iPhone 3G
I wasn’t exactly on the fence about getting an iPhone 3G but I had already decided that I was not going to rush out to buy one. I will probably wait until I start to have issues with my current iPhone before considering a new one. As mentioned before I am more excited about the introduction of the App Store an legit 3rd party apps which I will be able to take advantage of just fine on my current iPhone.
What has caught my eye recently is the slew of Mini Laptops that have been coming out lately. The first to catch my eye was the Asus Eee PCwhich is a mini laptop with a 9″ screen. HP also has their HP 2133 Mini-Note
and Dell has announced that they are coming out with one in a while. This seems to be the trend from all of the major manufacturers now.
You may be asking what is a mini laptop and why have one?
The Justice League Coming to the Silver Screen Soon?
Over the weekend my wife and I went to see the The Hulk which I thought was much better then the last Hulk movie. I like Edward Norton so the fact that he and Liv Taylor where in it already caused it to score points with me. It was basically the same story as the last Hulk movie but I felt that they did a much better job with this one. As good as it was though I still like Iron Man the best.
At the end of The Hulk Robert Downey Jr walks in as the same character he played in Iron Man and tells the General that he is putting a little "team" together and is wondering if he is interested. Even if the General isn’t interested I sure am. I think it is a brilliant marketing ploy to link all of these movies together. They will be able to have their own individual adventures while having movies together as well. I am sure we will see several cameos in the individual character’s films which I think is cool.
Anyway, I have not see anything "Official" around the web but I am sure it won’t be long before it gains traction.

The Offspring – Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace is Now Out
I wasn’t that big of an Offspring fan before but about a month and a half ago they released a single from their upcoming album Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace named Hammerhead. It was a pretty cool song that had very military sounding lyrics. The lyrics mentioned things like "Camouflage and guns, risk my life to keep my people from harm" and "Through this doorway, what’s on the other side, never knowing what i will find, locked and loaded voices screaming Let’s Go!". It is a pretty intense song which reminds me of our military personnel in other lands who are in harm’s way.
Anyway today the entire album was released and I purchased it hoping that the rest of the album would be as cool and intense as Hammerhead. I was really surprised at the fact that the rest of the album is pretty mellow except the last song Rise and Fall. In fact the album is the most mellow album that I have heard them make. I have two other albums from them and they are pretty intense. Honestly, I am not sure if I like it or not.
Oh well, I have paid the money for it so I will listen to it for a few more times and see if it grows on me. I guess this just isn’t what I expected.
You can listen to previews and buy it for $8.99 over at Amazon.com.

Starbucks Offers Free Wifi – Causes starbucks.com to go Down
I am sure that we have all heard the good news today – Starbucks is now offering 2 hours of free Wifi a day when you load up a Starbucks card with $5 or more and use it at least once a month. The only issue with this is that you need to register your Starbucks card on their website but it is down – probably because so many people are trying to register their cards.
Welcome to Digg effect Starbucks.
I do think it is cool that they are doing this. I just happened to get a Starbucks card as a gift a few weeks back and registered it to get the free syrup ($0.30 a pop adds up!). Where I live there are hardly any places that have free Wifi so the Starbucks down the street will be my new best friend. If I need more then 2 hours of access I guess I will just need to get 2 card

Propel Fitness Water – My New Energy Drink
I used to be a die-hard Red Bull drinker. I would usually have one after lunch just to get me through the rest of the day. About a month ago I grabbed a Propel Fitness Water because the store didn’t have Vitamin Water and Gatorade is too sweet for me. I was pleasantly surprised by it’s taste and the fact that it gave me energy like the Red Bull but without the crash at the end.
Now I am a daily Propel drinker. I do have a Red Bull on occasion but not like I used to. Propel is even easier to drink now that I I discovered that they have it in powder form as well. Now I just go fill a cup up with ice, dump the little package of powder on it, and then fill it with hot water which melts the majority of the ice. This makes an instant refreshing drink. That coupled with the fact that you can get a box of 8 of the packets for $3 makes it a great alternative to Red Bull.
After going back and reading this I realize that it sounds very much like a commercial but I assure you that it isn’t. I just really like Propel.

A Salute to Those That Protect Us – Here and Abroad
I just wanted to say thank you to all those who are presently in the Military active and in-active duty. Those that are here in the States and those that are in harm’s way. Thank you.
Thank you for stepping up and saying “I will”. Thank you for the sacrifice of leaving your family so I can be with mine. I hope God keeps you safe and brings you home quickly. My prayers are with you and your family. Thank you that you may not agree with why you are there but you continue on in Honor anyway.
My thanks go out to the families as well, especially who’s loved ones went, but did not come back.
There are no words that I can give other then I am sorry and that their and your sacrifice is appreciated. I hope their children grow up knowing how how their mom/dad gave the ultimate sacrifice for what they believed in. They should be proud and do all with their lives that is possible because their parents gave so they could have the freedom to be anything they want.
Thank you to our Armed Forces on this Memorial Day. Thank you.

Iron Man – One of the Best Movies I Have Seen in a Long Time
Last night my wife and I went to the movies and saw Iron Man. Now I had never followed Iron Man in the comic book or had even seen very many of the previews. I like the majority of the comic book to big screen movies they have been doing lately so i hoped that this one would be good.
Not only was it the best comic book to big screen movies I have seen it is one of my all-time favorites!
There are many reason why I like this movie so much. Here are few:
